Turtled!

You may have noticed that there are hardly any posts about the 'Aquarellistas' of the Hangar... This is because we have our own blog, www.aquarellista.blogspot.com. It is very popular among other watercolourists and watercolour teachers 😉 But now and then there are paintings that we don't want you to miss...

A fabulous and very characterful sea turtle by Carol Fischer

Last week the subject in the Aquarellista group was 'Sea Turtles'. Just Because. Also, they are very interesting, ancient creatures, around for over 100 million years, from the time of the dinosaurs. I learned from Agnès that they cannot retract their flippers like other turtles. Well, and they are absolutely beautiful, intelligent and full of expression!

All of us worked on doing them justice in watercolours  - and I think that worked out! Here are some results:

Celina's turtle - almost finished... I love her clear lines and the contrast between the flowy background, the interesting back and the almost mosaic-like flippers and head

Patience painted this amazing fast and energetic turtle... he swims just under the surface, and the sun shines!

And last but not least, Brenda's,  in the watercolour & feltpen technique that she so often uses in her work. Comic book-effect that adds the wink we sometimes need!

ABSTRACT VIBRATIONS Celina Schou

The best kept secret of the Abstract Vibrations Expo number IV must be Celina Schou.
She is behind all those blog posts about the artists, and it was Celina who built that fabulous Abstract Vibrations website. Working calmly in the background, she has made sure there was plenty of information about everyone! For which she deserves a lot of praise...

Celina is one of the Norwegian members of the Hangar Art Association. She sculpts, and paints both in watercolours and in acrylics, with the abstract group in the Hangar. She is also a member of 'les Beaux arts de Cannes' and she exhibits regularly, locally, internationally and with an impressive presence on the internet! In the Projet 195 exhibition, Celina presents 5 abstract paintings in acrylic - and a sculpture.

"Art is what inspires me and provides colour and flavour to my life" is what she sais - and that is clearly visible in the paintings shown here (apart from 'Fiat Lux' the pics are all taken 'live' in the exhibition):

An Abstract Marathon Session

A fairly good marathon runner will complete the distance in 3 hours. This is the same amount of time as we have on the Monday evenings to do our abstract painting. This Monday everyone was really energic and worked on their canvases as you can see from the paintings below. Everyone is preparing for the upcoming exhibition this summer in Theoule-sur-Mer. So far everyone has completed at least one painting – and the really fast painters are now on their fourth or fifth.

Sculpture class - by Christie Robinson

Christie’s sculpture classes have started up again! The Morning class (9.30 - 12.30) had Louise as a model today and as always a lot of good work was produced.

The afternoon class started their new sculpture year @2PM

Titia is working on a sculpture of her dog – not quite finished yet and it’s the details that take time!

Ann is experimenting with more abstract work. She takes her inspiration for nature. In the first picture you see her working on an abstract version of a conch shell. Ann has previously worked on the subject of shells. Below it you see one of her pieces which she has finished off with a raku glaze.

Marit joined the class before Christmas and has done some abstract pieces in clay. Here you see her starting off with her latest piece.

Carina Linne – a coming artist

Do you remember this picture ? It was painted by one of our members, called Carina Linne who used to attend Pim’s acrylic classes. (Presently she lives in Malta – but we hope to see her back soon).

This picture – “the suitcase”- is the first in a series of 3 pictures. The others are titled “the dance band” and ”Lillhärdal” (which is a small town in Sweden). Together with the music - '”Där björkarna susa”" by the Jailbird Singers they form the installation “Nostalgia”. Carina was one of 2037, who submitted their work for a place in a very prestigious exhibition in Sweden. She is one of only 131 who was accepted! Her installation will be on display at Liljevalchs spring exhibition from January 28th until march 27th 2011 in Stockholm. The Liljevalch art venue belongs to the City of Stockholm  and was opened back in 1916 as the first independent, public museum for contemporary art in Sweden. It is expected that her work will be viewed by some 50.000 visitors...

The Abstract class - Pim de Jongh

 The start of an abstract masterpiece by Michele de Laat

On Monday evenings, Pim de Jongh works with a group that tackles "The abstract". They are very motivated and did not take a break for Christmas – though a lot of the participants were away. Last Monday evening nearly everyone was there and they all agreed that it was nice to be back!

At the moment the class is working on really big canvases (130 x 162 cm). To finish something this size takes several lessons. Above you see the start of a masterpiece by Michele de Laat. There is still a lot of work to do before it is finished. Class members contribute with ideas for how to continue – and in the picture below you see Pim demonstrating how he would go on with some of the details.
