Sneak Preview: Workshop Cold Wax!

Meet my friend and fellow Artist Marina Teding van Berkhout (Marina TvB)
She creates artworks using oil paint and ‘Cold Wax’. You may have seen her beautiful work in our last ‘Theoule’ exhibition.

Marina has offered to give a workshop on Friday afternoons, for those interested in the technique.
Cold Wax Medium makes your oil paints thicker, but does not change their color and gives them a fabulous texture.

Marina a proposé de donner un atelier le vendredi après-midi aux personnes intéressées par cette technique. Le médium épaissit vos peintures à l'huile, mais ne change pas la couleur et vous permet de créer des textures vigoureux

In her workshop, Marina teaches you how to use Cold Wax. You will experiment with ways to add texture and layering. There will be a variety of drawing materials and tools including brayers, brushes, palette knives, scrapers and squeegees. Marina helps you build up a painting, abstract or figurative and she will show you the favorite techniques that she has learned over the past years.

Starter or experienced oil painter, you will definitely get to know exciting new techniques that will certainly enhance your work! If you are interested in this way of working and would like to know more about the technique, you can pre-book your place (or get more info) by emailing to info@hangarart.org
NB: There is only place for 6 participants

Portrait drawing - Monday morning 10 - 12 with Marina

After 5 well-visited Portrait theory sessions on the Thursday mornings, we now moved on to drawing sessions with a live model. These sessions are meant to bring into practice everything we have learned - which is difficult, but also very rewarding! These sessions are also open for others by the way, so if you feel like coming in and give model drawing a try, you are most welcome to join!

The pictures below are some of the results from last week (some photo's didn't work out I'm sorry!), when we had journalist and writer Carolyn Reynier from Nice as a model. All portraits are different (a portrait has two people in it, the person and the painter!) yet all (included the ones not printed here) are a good impressions of Carolyn in all personal styles...

Marina Teding van Berkhout: Aquarellista!

Marina Teding van Berkhout lives and works in the South of France since 2000 . She paints in watercolours and mixed media in a light and pleasant style. She attended many workshops in England and the Netherlands and just finished her studies at the ‘Academie superieure des Beaux-Arts Anca-Sonia’. She is a member of the Aquarellistas and painting in aquarelle watercolours is a passion in which she has now developed her own style: a great mix of wet-in-wet and more precise, dryer painting. Her paintings have a much-appreciated lyrical, lighthearted quality. She specializes in portraits of children, pets and other animals. In the Casablù exhibition, Marina shows her inspiration related to 'le Village'. Below a couple of aquarelles, more of her work can be admired via her website http://www.finewatercolours.com/

Aquarellistas exhibition 'le Village' II

From Saturday 17 - Friday 23 September, seven aquarellistas show their impressions of ‘le Village’, in aquarelle watercolours in Gallery Casablù, Rue Eugène Giraud in Valbonne.
The vernissage will take place on Sunday, 18 September from 3 - 6pm - come and have a glass and some nibbles with us!
The aquarellistas are: Anna Karin Fast, Brenda Moorhouse, Cathie van der Stel, Edith Alborni, Marina Kulik, Marina Teding van Berkhout, Sandra Seymour Dale

They work together in the Hangar and for this exhibition each created a number of aquarelles, inspired by the villages in the South of France.

The paintings are absolutely wonderful, it is more than worthwhile to pass by and have a look if you happen to be in the neighbourhood! The galerie is open from 10am - 6pm...
 Before...

And After... Cathie van der Stel and Anna Karin Fast's aquarelles make a good combination!

More pictures of more work will follow soon...

The last aquarelle session of the summer!

Ice cube by Cathie van der Stel

On 19 July we got together for the last true painting session (we will meet up tomorrow, but that will be for extensive lunch and 'loose ends') and it was worth it! Lots of great 'work on ice' that was started the week before (to cool off in the hot hot weather) and our visitor Georgina created a wonderfully natural flowing composition...

Aquarelle Tuesdays, 2 - 4.30pm - Marina Kulik

Portrait by Edith Alborni
Although the quality of the work was high, the picture above was the sure winner of last Tuesday! Do you see how stunning the light (=the white of the paper) is. That's very difficult to plan, well done! And also a big compliment for the folds and shadows, the proportions and the hair... In not more than a couple of weeks Edith has become a true aquarellista, with her own ideas and way of working! I'm content and look forward to more work from her...
Sea view by Ann Edwards

Ann painted two sea views - one that you can see above, a nice balance with wet-in-wet and wet-on-dry painting, and also she finished (in less than half an hour) 'Venice' after Turner, excellent practice for working quickly, with wet brushes that give clear, determined rims when dry, and it worked out very well - but I managed to blur the photo, so I owe you that one, I guess I'll keep it for a whole series of Turner-inspired paintings, as Cathie van der Stel is also working on one (blurred too, so sorry!) that looks very cool and light and interesting.
Aquarellista Marina Teding van Berkhout joined us and worked on a super aquarelle of a french window with Italian shutters, wash hanging outside and strong shadows within the theme 'Le Village' for our expo in September. And I didn't take a picture - so next time, when it is finished!
Lies Timmermans, Hélène van der Kroft and Brenda Moorehouse worked on the 'roses without thorns' for the Grand Prix d'aquarelle and I can't show you what they created because the work for the Grand Prix must be new and never shown! but I can assure you that especially Brenda is working on something spectacularly beautiful...
And then last but not least, Hélène van der Kroft (apart from a couple of roses) made a postcard for the Summer Fête that I like a lot (and that can be won on 19 June):

Sunny Watercolour Tuesday -

Catwoman by Edith Alborni

Sometimes I am extra proud to be part of the aquarellista network... Look at just a couple of examples of the astonishing work of our group... funny, creative, original and often so beautiful!!

'Books' by Cathie van der Stel - one of her best (the other one is in this post too!).

Cathie uses several out-of-comfort-zone materials for her artwork - one of them... tea...

And this is the other 'best' by Cathie van der Stel... a still life in the fabulous colours of spring...

Marina Teding-van Berkhout works on her 'portrait of Ines'

If you look carefully or enlarge the picture you will see all basic ingredients for a good aquarelle session: Brushes, paint, water, stretched paper, kitchenroll, tea and cookies...

Some were working inside - others couldn't resist the sun... Edith's fuchsia catwoman's mask was created outside, and Helene worked on a portrait in similar colours

Inside, Helene noticed that her lady lacked lipstick...

Purple Lady by Hélène van der Kroft

Lesley and Roly worked on eyes - highlights, pupil, iris, the colour of eyewhite (off-white), shape, skin colour, lashes, the shadow of the lashes... check!
And while Roly worked on an aquarelle of a boat, Lesley did her version of the catwoman mask

Last but definitely not least, Ann finished her reading gardner, based on an existing aquarelle by (will fill in name tomorrow) From this month onwards, Ann will create originals! We're looking forward to seeing that development...
