Live Drawing - alternate Monday mornings with Marina

Charmian - drawing with regular graphite pencil

Every other Monday morning, we have a live nude model in the Hangar. We draw all morning, with different materials and in very different styles. Live drawing is difficult - it involves motion and emotion and knowledge of anatomy and all of that is very good for you! As all participants will agree. Last Monday Brigitte modeled for us, and here are a coule of pictures - not the best, I took them with my phone, but it will give you an idea of what we're doing. Somehow the pictures of Christiane and Bernard (which were so GOOD!) have disappeared - I will make up for that next time...

Kyria made a lot of very quick, big sketches. With charcoal

This drawing by Pauline is created with white pencil on black paper

Betty's version was created with an all-graphite stick

The artist at work: Neville with pencil on canvas-paper

Claudie worked on black paper with white crayon

Our next session will be on March the 3d! You are invited to come and to try it out - basic materials and the model are included in the class-fee of 18€. If you would like to join, drop Marina an email (via the hangar website) or comment below for more info!

Live Model Drawing - with Marina

Every other Monday morning we draw a model. In the 'regular' sessions (sometimes we do different things) our goal is to create drawings that 'catch' the essence of model and we do that in 3 different ways: With very quick poses, of 1 or max 2 minutes; with these poses you have no time to think or criticise yourself while you draw! The resulting drawings are often just a couple of lines, they have a spontaneous character and seem to 'move'

Karin's spontaneous and moving quick sketch! Great work!

Anita drew smaller pictures and combined them thus creating an interesting page

After this 'warming up' we proceed with poses that last around 10 minutes. We use that time to try out things, crayons, colour and styles - drawing just the outlines, or the empty spaces, or the background... While others concentrate on creating the perfect proportions...

Probably because Marie-Jo is such a beautiful and inspiring model (yes she will be there again next time) many of the drawings were particularly well done as portraits

After a well-deserved coffee break (because it truly is hard work, model drawing) we use the last hour for just one pose. There is no result obligation, experiment is welcomed, yet often these drawings are very good, even from the less-experienced participants!

Live Model Drawing on Monday - with Marina Kulik

Every other Monday morning the drawing group has a nude model. We usually start with a couple of 'short poses'. The model will assume a (often) complicated pose for just one or two minutes and the participants have to really hurry to get the pose on paper! That means we don't have time to think about it, we have to take superquick decisions and we often can't finish the drawing and just hint the direction or the arc of the back, or an important detail... It is difficult, but also very rewarding and although this is absolutely not done for 'results', sometimes wonderful pages are created, like the one above (by Neville, who tries to hide behind it)
We call this the 'warming up' and after it, we draw 10-minute poses. They feel like a very long time, and drawings are finished, and accurate. Last week the 10 minute challenge was 'just the outline'
10-minute pose, with just the outline - drawn by Sandra Seymour-Dale

After the 10-minue poses we have a break, to look and learn from each others work - and have a coffee or a tea, accompanied by my 'healthy cookies'. And with plenty of energy we start the last hour, where we draw just one pose, that needs to be perfect in proportion, show volume, light and shadow, and background... OR we just walk around and  draw the model from different perspectives... here's what we did, with our favourite model Marie-Jo in a beautiful, expressive pose suggested by Sandra

Drawing - Monday 28 January - with Pim

Every other Monday morning Pim treats his students to one of his special still lifes. (Eh, that is, in the winter... as soon as the weather permits it he takes them outside to draw perspective, villages, trees, hills and ruins...)

This Monday the challenge was this. So beautiful...
And here are some of the resulting drawings: realistic, with contrasting shadows and a warm atmosphere...

DRAWING - Monday morning with Pim

Pim, hiding behind his still life...

Last Monday it was Pim's turn to give the drawing class, and he announced that the group was going to work on 'Volume and Perspective'. An interesting and certainly challenging subject! As always the still life was very much on topic and after a theoretical introduction everyone was ready to draw... Here are the results! Perspective checks out, as does the volume, suggested by dark shadows and light surfaces!

Anita Frenkel made two versions, here's number 1...

Spectacular stripes

Lucia Gualtieri
With Pim in hospital we (the drawing group) use 'his' Monday mornings in an alternative way - last time without a model, but with inspiring pictures! Pictures have the advantage that they are two-dimensional and sit very still, and models on pictures can sit for 3 hours in complicated poses. For a couple of these pictures, we worked with white pen or crayon on black paper.
We worked very hard and the results (though not all were finished) were stunning! As you can see for yourself...
