On Friday afternoons: Oil Painting for starters - with Marina T

From 13 September, there will be an Oil Class for starters on the Friday afternoon from 2 - 4.30pm, by Marina Teding van Berkhout (Marina T) The class is meant for those who want to learn to paint with oils. The objective is to familiarise yourself with oils.You will discuss and practice how to build up a painting, which mediums to use, different oil painting techniques, colour mixing, value studies and more. After the initial fixed program, you will be free to paint your own subjects -or participate at the ‘subject of the week’. Bring your own materials like paint brushes, oil paints and support (canvas, oil paper or canvas board). If you don’t have oil paints or brushes, don’t buy any yet: Marina T will bring hers and she will discuss the best colours and brushes to start with. There will always be ample supplies of turpentine, medium, gesso etc. The class fee is 20€ pp NB: For those of you, interested in discovering the wonderful world of painting in Oils and Cold Wax medium, you are most welcome to join us! While working on your own subject, Marina T will show you how to create beautiful textured background and layers. Bring your own materials (oil paint, support, cold wax, palette). Cold wax medium can be bought from Marina T and she will bring her bowl scrapers, mark making tools, stencils and pigments. Sculpture workshop on the last Thursday and Friday of August

On Thursday 29 and Friday 30 August. Marie organizes one of her fantastic sculpture workshops!

A great way to finish your holiday: sculpting for a longer period of time, with concentration and intensity - and in the company of other artists, with the help and input of creative original Marie!. 
If you are a Hangar regular, you can check out the sculptures that are drying in the wall cupboard to get an impression of what is possible. 
There are still some places available

• Minimum of 5 participants
• Non-Hangar members welcome, they pay 10€ extra

The Hangar trip to Bargème - art creation & fun combined

On Friday 19 July, Charlotte, Fred, Hanneke, Ina, Kristina, MJ, Marijke, Marina, Maud, Nelly, Patrick and Pim, drove up to the beautiful village of Bargème. We've been there on previous Hangar trips and as always there was plenty of ahmospheric beauty for everyone to draw and paint! We have our favourite spots, with quaint little buildings, old stones, interesting plants and breathtaking views. And because of the hot sun we started in the morning under the trees of the park. Everyone was free to choose their own style - as long as it started with a good drawing!

Ina, MJ, Nelly and Marijke tackeled the view from different points, Maud, Patrick, Kristina et Fred drew the small old stone ruins while Hanneke and Charlotte, later joined by Nelly, drew and painted the view from the other side. Time flies when you're having fun, so before we knew it it was time for lunch - and we went to the wonderful restaurant-with-a-view 'Les Jardins de Bargème'

The food was wonderful - and the mood was great, what a fun group! We couldn't stop laughing, Pim of course had a couple of crazy jokes and Fred also showed an enormous sense of humor. But - disciplined as we were, just a bit after 2pm we went back to 'work', this time near the old ruins, a very interesting and characterful site. 

Marijke, Patrick, Maud, Ina, MJ, Nelly and Charlotte drew the marvellous ruins from this side (results below) while...

 ...Kristina and Fred drew it from the other side and Hanneke chose her own perfect spot in the village next to the fountain. Around 4.30pm we packed and drove back - and got together in the Hangar once more to check out the impressive amount of work!

 Afternoon Art: the large ruin, seen from both viewpoints, in styles that vary from bold sturdy pastel surfaces to delicate fine line drawings. I love it!

 And then there were the other drawings (and watercolours) of subjects like doors, bell towers and people!

Pim and I are so happy and impressed with everybody's hard work - and with the quality, the different styles and the originality of the drawings. We thank the participants for a wonderful day!!

What's the Acrylic Experiments-group up to?

On Monday afternoons, from 2 - 4.30pm there's always an acrylics class. Either with Pim (Abstract) or with Marina (Experiments) as instructors. Here are a couple of pictures and an explanation or two about how we (rock &) roll in the Acrylic Experiments group!

On the Mondays that Marina teaches her Life Model class (every other week) she also hosts the Acrylic Experiments in the afternoon. It is very calm at the moment, many regulars are on holiday, so if you want to pass by to try for yourself, you are most welcome. You can just pop in or send a mail to info@hangarart.org . Also write to that address if you'd like to be on the mailing list to receive the 'Weekly' with all the news and announcements about the class.

Last Monday we experimented with ways to apply paint, mediums, texture and materials...

OK – the last photo is certainly the best colour-wise, but you see anyway that  she added pink first, and then green. It is super-textured and rich in colour now ready to accept a foreground – which may well be a 'negative space' concept… More later!!

 The 'Making Of' Brenda's abstract on loose linen, first tape and spontaneous brush strokes, then splashes of thick paint for the background. Next time she will add a cartoon-style portrait...

Peter has worked a long time on his abstract with the title  'Everything I do gonna be funky from now on'. Every detail is exactly what he wants it to be.

 Like Peter, Irene also wants to work long on her abstracts. She can't help creating landscapes even if she doesn't mean to - it must be in her genes...

The acrylics atelier with Marina: Bring your own basic materials (canvas, paint, brushes). There will be ideas, general help & input and all kinds of mediums to experiment with. Beginners are welcome. The fee is 15€.

The first Day trip to Cipières - a success!!

On Friday 28 June we had our first drawing day-trip. We went to the lovey village of Cipières,  slightly worried that it would be just too hot to sit somewhere to draw!

But Pim, Marina, Hélène, Sylvie, Yvon, Sylvia, Chantal, René, Isabelle, Brenda and Beverly went anyway and we can report that it was terrific up there in the mountains! The messages that reached us from Chateauneuf and Roquefort were that it was too hot to move, while we had a bit of wind and it was reasonably cool in the shadow! 

OK, enough about the weather 😎😎😎

The village of Cipières offers everything a drawer wants! Beautiful plants, quaint little streets, romantic fountains, lovely views, arcades and many interesting details.

And on top of that - not much tourism, so we more or less had all that beauty to ourselves...

The plan was to create 'loose style sketches' with a thin fineliner feltpen, with Hélènes fantastic carnet de voyage as an example, and of course all participants were welcome to give that their own direction. We set  to work and the morning results were quite impressive (see below). 

Around noon 'les mecs' were thirsty and organised a little meeting, after which we all sat ourselves to have a lovey simple yet tasty lunch

After lunch the sun had traveled and we had to look for new places to sit, and new views. And we created more. At 4 pm we packed and drove back to the Hangar, where we did 'the line-up' = talking about all the work, getting ideas and inspiration from each other, whie drinking cold water in that wonderfully air-conditioned space! Heaven!
