News about the Funeral of Patience 'Devas' Marriott

Our friend and fellow artist Patience 'Devas' Marriott, who passed away on 11 February, will be buried on March 12th

The service will be at 11 am in the

Holy Trinity Church

If anyone from the Hangar is in London at the time, the family will be delighted to see them.

There will be a drink afterwards, close to her house.

The family has taken care of the flower arrangements, but really appreciates your donations to the Royal Trinity Hospice where Patience spent her last days.

IM Patience 'DEVAS' Marriott

It is with great sadness that I inform you that our dear friend Patience peacefully passed away on the morning of the 11th of February. She spent her last days in a beautiful hospice with a garden view and enjoyed watching the birds land on her balcony.

Most of you knew Patience - personally or by reputation, she was such a spirited lady, full of amazing stories - and with a very young mind!

Until 2018 she never missed a life class, where she was an example for all, she had an amazing confident line and an accurate and quick drawing style. Patience was very popular also because of her sharp sense of humour.

She loved the Hangar, came to many classes and when her family stayed with her, she used to bring them all over. We soon found out that her daughter and grandchildren had inherited her talent in drawing and painting. Patience actively participated, she often came on our trips, where she drew, sculpted and watercoloured with enthusiasm.
Teachers Pim and Marie are very sad too and will miss her dearly in their classes.

I had the pleasure of exhibiting with her in the Contemporary Art Exhibition in Valbonne, back in  2010 when it was still an art fair you couldn't afford to miss. We had such fun together, we both sold well and got to know each other. We repeated the duo show in 2015 in La Roquette, and became real friends while we drove together to Italy, where we shared a fantastic and creative time in Saluzzo.

In 2011 we published her portfolio book - it gave insight in the kind of artist she was - and how well-known as a sculptor! (Her artist name was 'Devas', 'gender-neutral' as we would call it nowadays, because she was commissioned to create a monumental sculpture for a Saudi prince and that job could not be done by a woman...!!)

Patience had many friends and admirers in the Hangar. We will all miss her presence, are thinking of her and will fondly remember her forever. The Hangar will send flowers to the funeral of which I will publish the date and the address as soon as I have that information.

We wish her family and friends the strength they need to cope with the loss of their beautiful, talented, original Patience.

Turtled!

You may have noticed that there are hardly any posts about the 'Aquarellistas' of the Hangar... This is because we have our own blog, www.aquarellista.blogspot.com. It is very popular among other watercolourists and watercolour teachers 😉 But now and then there are paintings that we don't want you to miss...

A fabulous and very characterful sea turtle by Carol Fischer

Last week the subject in the Aquarellista group was 'Sea Turtles'. Just Because. Also, they are very interesting, ancient creatures, around for over 100 million years, from the time of the dinosaurs. I learned from Agnès that they cannot retract their flippers like other turtles. Well, and they are absolutely beautiful, intelligent and full of expression!

All of us worked on doing them justice in watercolours  - and I think that worked out! Here are some results:

Celina's turtle - almost finished... I love her clear lines and the contrast between the flowy background, the interesting back and the almost mosaic-like flippers and head

Another gorgeous sea turtle, by Elia. This one high up in the sea. Perfect use of salt and colour.

Sylvie I's turtle in deep Sea, visibly created with pleasure!

Sylvie II created a wet-in-wet protest against turtle slaughter.

Patience painted this amazing fast and energetic turtle... he swims just under the surface, and the sun shines!

And last but not least, Brenda's,  in the watercolour & feltpen technique that she so often uses in her work. Comic book-effect that adds the wink we sometimes need!

Hangar Aquarellistas Top Act during "Route des Arts"

The Route des Arts is an initiative of the 'Pôle Touristique'  in our area, to promote the arts and the artists with all the member-cities and -villages, in several ways - open ateliers, animations, concours and exhibitions of local artists. La Roquette is this years' host village - and the opening ceremony will be in the "Maison des Associations" in La Roquette... And then:

This weekend, on 9 and 10 July, the Aquarellistas of the Hangar (Liz Douglas, Sandra Seymour-Dale, Carol Fischer, Tricia Bennett, Edith Alborni, Brenda Moorhouse, Patience Devas, Sylvie Morlière, Cathie van der Stel and Marina Kulik) fill the Maison des Associations with their very best beautiful watercolours! 

On Saturday from 12.30 and Sunday from 10am we will be delighted to see you and show and explain our work! 

It will be a colourful and interesting combination of styles, with several themes and subjects - but bound visually by that attractive and poetic transparency of the aquarelle paint!

11 Drawings of a naked girl

 

Every other Monday we have a life class and when Louise is posing everyone always feels just a little bit more inspired... She will also be there coming Tuesday (16 May) so if you want to join us and  add your version to the collection, you are most welcome from 9.30! These drawings are created in 45 minutes, the time we have left after a (necessary) coffee break. Before that we draw 1- and 2-minute poses and a couple of 10-minute poses... It is a great way to start your creative week - you'll be exhausted and fulfilled at the same time!
