EXHIBITION PIM DE JONGH

Most of you know this - but just a gentle reminder for the others that your fav teacher Pim de Jongh has an exhibition in the beautiful Chateau l'Aumerade in Pierrefeu. His new, abstract work will be on display from November 1st until December 2nd 2014. The opening is on Friday 31 October, from 6pm.

We recommend you check it out! 

The exhibition is opened from Monday - Friday from 8.30am - 12.30 and from 2pm - 6pm

VERY BEAUTIFUL EXHIBITION. OPEN UNTIL SUNDAY 12 OCTOBER

Try to visit this one, I recommend it, because it is truly great to see all that diversity and quality artwork. And by the way, things are moving, there is so much sold already! Some of the dutch Hangar students are exhibiting, but also teachers Nelly, Pim and yours truly have work there!! It is interesting to see that the three of us clearly have similarities in the sizes and the importance of colour in our paintings, yet our works are so different!

 Nelly's two paintings - large sizes, very symbolic. The one on the right (Sacrifice au dieu) shows an African woman with two dolls between her breasts. This refers to an African tradition, to give a woman who lost a child a doll, that she has to take care of (feed, clean, dress) for at least 6 weeks. This woman lost twins. And there is so much more in the painting that is open to interpretation - you can look at it for hours and it makes you think...

Pim has two abstracts, large size, colourful and with shapes that cannot really be defined or understood. The titles are 1 and 2 so it is completely open for everyones interpretation. Just stand in front of it and see what it does to you. Very interesting!

Marina (yours truly) is a bit in between: I am still on a path to somewhere I don't yet quite know - researching, trying out and totally enjoying the ride - as you will be able to see from my paintings!! I will show it on my facebook page and website, and if you visit I am sure you will see it, as it is very hard to miss! ☺

Drawing a still life - Mondays 9.30 - 12 with Pim de Jongh

As every other Monday in the winter, Pim built one of his spectacular still lives (this time with white plaster objects by the look of it) and the participants then created their cubist version of it, with ink (and dark watercolours) using overlapping shapes…

As always the results were very interesting, showing graphic transparency and changing everyday objects into something very special, wonderful to look at.

Again, we recommend this class for everybody who is interested in deepening  their drawing skills, learning more about how to draw shadow, light and contrasts, better understanding perspective and much much more. Apart from that, Pim is always fun to be with, the Hangar is a great space to be on a cold Monday morning (as soon as it is warmer Pim will take you outside to draw), so give it a try someday soon!!

This class alternates with the live model class, the next live model class is Monday 3 February, the next regular drawing class will take place on 10 February - you are cordially invited!!

 Every other Monday Pim builds up a fabulous still life. It is always a surprise, and it is not just beautiful, there is also an idea behind it, an expression as well as a educational purpose - something to observe and learn from.
Last Monday it was a typical autumn atmosphere and the participants had to draw with pencils, showing the light/dark contrasts and the very different materials...

 

 

Strangely, this class is not very well visited. The excellent news is of course, that if you feel like joining, there is still place for you! You will get a lot of attention from Pim, and have a terrific and rewarding morning, while learning a lot, in an intuitive way, about proportions, perspective and measuring. Highly recommended!!

The Pure Nature Expo in Valbonne - day 1

Today, Monday 7 October, was the first day of 'accrochage' for the artwork of the Hangar artists! The Oil and Watercolours/drawing groups brought in their work and arranged the panels. It was a lot of work, but in the end as always totally rewarding - it already looks very good! Tomorrow Pim's groups will put up their acrylics and then it will be perfect!

 'Jesus' on the cross, overgrown with ivy - a conceptual artwork by Devas. Here still on the floor, from tomorrow it can be admired on the back wall. This sculpture will change during the exhibition and I will post about it...

D A Y T R I P T O B A R G È M E

This Thursday (25 July) Pim and Marina organize ‘a day trip’ and they invite you to come with them to Bargème (83840) for the day!

Bargème is a lovely, unspoilt medieval village with an absolutely breathtaking view, 36 km north of Draguignan.
The program:
We depart around 9.30am from the Hangar, in as few cars as possible.
It is a 60km drive through the beautiful Var which will cost us approximately an hour.
We will determine the right locations, get instructions and sketch with pencils.

We have booked an extensive lunch in the lovely local restaurant ‘les Jardins de Bargème’ at 12. After which we will work out the sketches using ink, sepia, watercolours and ecoline, in the shade – or draw another subject. You will find that there is more than plenty to see and be inspired by!!
We aim to be back in the Hangar around 5.30 pm.

The price for the day, with two teachers and all drawing materials, boards, paper, ink etc is 50€ pp.
An excellent 3-course lunch menu will be served for around 20€
If you have them available, please bring one or more folding chairs.
Also a bottle of water, a hat, sunscreen, a parasol…

Monday Evening Abstract Class with Pim

Half the group has now embarked on a new project (the other half is still finishing off the last project). The new project is really fun:

• work on small formats - 2 -3 - 4 canvases in a series
• fill the canvas with gesso mixed with plaster - or user modelling paste
• build up an interesting background with a lot of structure
• in the wet background put in bits of pre-painted canvas, jute, pre-painted paper or similar
• when dry paint over using few extra colours
•

Abstract project: Squares

Our current project is producing an abstract using squares in very few colours. The squares could be freely interpreted (as can be seen below) - as could the interpretation of few. Not many finished the project - so work will continue for at least another session - maybe even two. It's interesting to see how a project like this can give such different results.

Monday Morning Drawing Class - with Pim de Jongh

Every Monday morning there is a drawing class - the classes alternate between model drawing with Marina Kulik and "technical" drawing with Pim de Jongh. SO what is actually technical drawing ? In short it is everything that is not model / portrait drawing. Some Mondays are spent working on perspective, some on light and shadows, and there are a whole lot of other useful subjects that are covered. Useful ? - yes definitely because it is theory that can be put to good use when painting.

Monday 13/2 the project was to draw a still life. Pim set up a beautiful composition and his students had to make their drawing using lines and not be shading.

Abstract Vibrations - 2

After the successful exhibition the abstract group held in Theoule-sur-Mer last summer, they have been invited to exhibit in the Salle St. Esprit in Valbonne. The exhibition opens this coming Friday ( 3rd February) at 10:00. The vernissage is in the evening at 18:30. The exhibition lasts until Sunday 26th February and is open daily from 10:00 - 18:00. Every day one of the artists will be in Valbonne to show you around and answer questions.

There are 21 participants - including Pim de Jongh and Christie Robinson. In all there are 36 pieces of artwork on display (28 paintings and 8 scuptures). Most of the work has not been shown previously. There are also 3 new members of the Hangar (but not new as artists) with work on display.

The task of hanging up all the paintings looks so easy - but it certainly is not. Our artistic duo - Pim and Anne H. used Monday and Tuesday to put in place a harmonious display. On Wednesday the sculpture group was in place to set up their work.

Everything was ready in time for the opening on Friday 3rd February.
