Light, Dark, Contrast - and Sweets

In this post we start with two wonderful and interesting aquarelles by Sandra Seymour-Dale. Sandra works as follows: she often uses a picture (she takes them herself, of something out of nature) to let herself be inspired. The lines, or the colours, or the shapes - lead her towards a more or less abstract work. It usually takes several sessions and layers before she is happy, and as you can see above and below, it's worth the time spent on it!!

A project to be finished - Cathie and Edith are both painting a candy still life - colourful jelly beans and other nice colourful sweets in a glass jar. From the same picture and you can see that - but still their 'handwriting' is so different! Love that ☺- and look forward to the finished paintings

Aquarelle Tuesday 5 June, 2 - 4.30pm

Onions & Irises, Volume & a Falcon

The 5th of June was the first Tuesday this year that we all agreed that it was better outside than inside... We were sitting underneath a roof of fresh green leaves from the trees on the Hangar terrain, the sun was hot and bright but we didn't feel it, it was just right, not too cool not too hot! And the tea was great as always. The weather inspired many to work on new subjects - while others were working on the cover of Chris France's new book. This means that we don't have much to show for yet, as the book cover needs to be judged and therefore is still top secret and most of the new subjects are not yet in a stage that we would like to show  it to you! They will be the 'before and after' images for next week...

However - there is one that, although not finished, is already looking mighty fine:

 Georgie worked on a commission, a friend who saw the iris she had painted last week for mothersday, immediately commissioned her for a 'male' version... Here's the result:

There was only one starter present - Rose-Marie. She worked on her volume exercise and discovered the power of shadow, and the difference between a smooth and hard transition (as in the blue resp. yellow stripes). Also the shadows she put underneath the whole object give it a clear volume. Well done and that's enough, on to the spheres...

The stunning picture of a falcon is painted by Edith. She created it as a gift for her son's birthday and it is really very well done! You can appreciate the detail even more if you enlarge the picture (by clicking on it...)

Aquarelle Tuesday

Colourful Creations

In our aquarelle session of last week we worked around two themes (parasols and recipes for our Aquerellista cookbook), we finished ongoing projects, proceeded with the calendar and we welcomed two new girls, Gaby and Rose-Marie! A busy and productive afternoon - and everything was about 'colour'! The theme du jour was 'Parasols'. I brought colourful pictures (and real ones - but forgot to show them) and the results were in one word great!

Agnes McLaughlin -original as always- used her own input, one picture for the colours and one for the subject, and painted these lovely little girls with parasols. (Love their little feet!!)

 Georgie Hole hasn't finished hers but it is already so good!!

Lesley started a very difficult construction of a beautiful parasol, more about that next time and Cathie worked on these lovely old fashioned ones:

...and finished this STUNNING basket with pinecones.

Edith Alborni finished her  'mysterious girl with peacock feather'. Isn't is gorgeous?!

In the meantime, work on our recipes goes on. Lesley Bufton works on her tomato sauce ingredients. She experimented with salt on the orange worktop but washed it out again as she wasn't happy with the result. Looks like it might be finished this week!

Agnes McLaughlin made the first breakfast illustration for the cookbook. Lots of fun in this as usual. The pinapple originally was a cookie, also note the Porridge bowl and all the handy signs ... The tablecloth with distorted perspective contrasts so nicely with the elegant china! And the silver is very well done...

Saturday Class for French Speakers

The Saturday Acrylics class is mainly for French speaking artists – although some others occasionally sneak in. It is a harmonious and productive full day class – with a short break for lunch. Today there were about 10 participants. Here you see some of them.

Rose-Marie (Duclos) is a new member and here she is finishing off her colourful landscape.

Edith has been working hard on her portrait – but it’s not quite finished yet.

Lisa (Loheac) works on several abstracts at a time – here you see her putting the finishing touches on one of them.

Pim is always saying “leave it – leave it”, but not everyone listens. It is so tempting to add a little more – and then you overdo it.

Julia is proudly showing the picture she has been working on for several lessons.
